1968 Martin D-28 Dreadnought Guitar

Here's a customer's '68 D-28 and it's as lovely as you'd expect it to be. Post-repairs (neck reset, fretwork, etc.) it plays spot-on and it's ready to go. It has no cracks and it's all-original save the new pickguard, too.

Like a lot of late-'60s and early-'70s Martin dreadnoughts, the bracing is a bit stiff and so it doesn't have the same "bloom" right off the bat like a '50s D-28. It does have all that velvety-mids, chocolate-bass thing  going on, though, and the stiffer bracing does make a guitar that has more clarity. A lot of the '50s guitars are cannons but can get overly-mellow as they age.

Anyhow -- check out the jaw-dropping back and sides...

Boy that's some beautiful quarter sawn rosewood. Re-top with Adirondack and pre-war bracing. Or just string it up and play it...

Ohhh it sounds great as-is, no need to mod. I do like shaving the main X a bit and the first tonebar... at which point these start sounding really close to early '50s excellence.
