Mailbag: 1930s Regal Dobro Resonator Guitar
Here's another "ID this email" set of photos -- this time it's a mid-late '30s Regal-made resonator guitar that's basically a Dobro with different branding and an ebonized maple (rather than rosewood) fretboard. It even has the squared-upper-bout "Dobro" shape to the body. The cone, coverplate, and screen-soundholes are all Dobro hardware and that's not surprising because Regal made all of the Dobro bodies in that decade as far as I know.
For reference's sake, here are some other Regal/Dobro products:
- #1 is the most-usual type of roundneck model, which was also shared by
- #2 many Gretsch-branded Dobro-style resonators made by Regal
- #3 is VERY similar to this emailed-about guitar, but with the L-00-style body shape
- #4 is a fancy, squareneck version of #3 with mahogany veneer and
- #5 is the archtop-shaped, Chimes body shape
