2014 Gibson Les Paul Melody Maker (Pinstriped) Electric Guitar
Overview: Years ago, I helped the owner of this guitar get it setup and adjusted. He'd bought it from the fellow who did the hot rod paintjob (Todd Fisher), as I recall. Since then, this guitar has come back in for resale and it's fun to have it here. This era of simplified, satin-finished, mass-produced Gibsons got a lot of great instruments into the hands of players for not a ton of money. This one feels, sounds, and plays better than it ought to.
Tone: It has a pair of Alnico-pole P90-style pickups and so it has more of a DynaSonic/early Gretsch sound to it compared to your typical P90 pickup which would have less clarity and balance and more bark and growl. I like the design of these pickups a lot -- they suit a huge variety of styles.
Feel: The neck is quick and easy and has modern conveniences -- a normal nut width and 12" radius.
Interesting features: As noted, the pickups are interesting in themselves and a nice alternative to the normal P90s. This one also has a good-quality, one-piece, wraparound, compensated bridge. Yes, and, of course, the "flames and pinstripes" paintjob is a looker, too. The owner of this guitar clearly played it a lot because the first time I saw this it was almost new and now it looks like a guitar that was lovingly-used on a ton of gigs as it has properly-worn edges here and there and it's had enough playwear to remove part of the flames-paint near the neck pickup.
Repairs included: Between Gurion and Jose, it got a level/dress of the frets and a good setup.
