2000s Walt Kuhlman (Gypsy's Music) Octave Mandolin
Overview: Walt passed away some time ago but I've had the luck to have worked on several of his instruments in the past. They always sound great but exhibit quirks of the builder's style that need to be tamed a little bit. After a bit of work, this one turned into a nice player and has a good, full sound and a fast neck. This one is already on hold -- sorry to anyone tempted!
Interesting features: The top is solid spruce and it appears to have solid walnut for the back and sides. There's maple binding and the board is ebony with a radius to it, too (unusual on most octave mandolins). The bridge is (thankfully) adjustable and we matched its top with the radius of the board. It has an unusual, handmade tailpiece that is intended for ball-end strings but can be made to work with loop-ends in a pinch.
Repairs included: Sarah gave it a level/dress of the frets, bridge mod, and setup work. It's playing spot-on.
