2010s Mitchell MBJ200 Deluxe 5-String Resonator Banjo
Overview: This Mitchell-branded instrument is very similar to many other modern, budget-level import 5-strings but has a nicer loo and a slightly-quicker neck feel. The rim is a simply ply-maple affair with no tonering (just a shaped top edge) and a Kay-style, single coordinator rod setup with turnbuckle adjustment that allows for easy action adjustments on the fly. It has a retro, slightly-mellow sound for use as a bluegrasser but it can also be easily converted into an openback with removal of the resonator mounting plates and resonator itself.
It has a smart-looking headstock shape and retro inlay throughout the fretboard that recalls Gibson models a bit.
Repairs included: I added a couple of "keeper bolts" from the rim's inside and into the heel to lock the neck in position (so it can't rotate at the heel if it gets loose at all) which is something I do to all instruments using this style of coordinator rod. I then gave it a bit of cleaning and a good, thorough setup. It plays spot-on and is ready to serve.
