Workshop: Ludwig Clamps


This Ludwig (made by Harmony, in this case) tenor guitar is getting a bridge plate patch and also an additional brace on the lower bout to stabilize it against bellying. Many of these high-grade Harmony-made tenors have very, very little bracing so the top deflects under tension sometimes as much as 1/16" (but usually 1/32"). This one had zero bracing on the lower bout so I'm installing a light ladder brace (slightly transverse, really) to stiffen it up before stringing and doing final setup.

There's that checker binding again that Harmony liked to use on instruments in this era. It always looks good and it seems to always survive undamaged, definitely adds character! Charles
