Ephemera: Count Them Hooks (1880s)


The war-of-the-hooks progressed from the 1870s into the early 1900s and, after a while, folks realized that you simply do not need 40+ hooks to keep your banjo's head snug and tight. When this fellow was picking, however, I'm sure they gave him peace of mind as he entertained the ladies in that snappy outfit (and haircut).

Another great shot here...I'm working on a Supertone banjo at the moment with 38 hooks...pain to clean/derust all those hooks! But banjo bling is worth it!
