Local Flavor: More Macro Bugs at the River

This tiny spider on the blade of grass is just too cute... for a spider.

I followed this guy as it was flying-about and then it made a mistake and got itself caught by the current on landing. I got down on my hands and knees and followed it as the river swept it away. Amazingly, my first snap caught this.

The super-tiny fly here was washing itself in the undergrowth. It's funny how epic small spaces seem when you get up and close to tiny life.

I won't argue with beetles, either.

Or snails, I guess.

Yes, it was "golden hour" down there.

I know this quip from David Quammen's first book of essays, but here it is (more or less) as harvested of the World Wide Glowscreen:

There is a story, possibly apocryphal, of the distinguished British biologist, J.B.S. Haldane, who found himself in the company of a group of theologians. On being asked what one could conclude as to the nature of the Creator from a study of his creation, Haldane is said to have answered, “An inordinate fondness for beetles.”

sorta like Jake's inordinate fondness for plaid shirts ...

I'm guessing from the last photo that Jake likes the stones even more than the beetles.

Reese: yes, it's all real.

Andy: if it ain't plaid, it's a t-shirt or a jacket.

MM: hell, yes. I'm going to say it right now: I'm no fan of the Be-AT-les. Sorry everyone. Gimme SOME GIRLS played end to end on repeat for any summer car trip.
