2021 Gibson G-00 Flattop Guitar
The G-00 is a newer offering from Gibson and is basically a very stripped-down take on the '30s L-00 model. It shares the same body outline, scale length, and overall vibe as its '30s forebear, but has no binding, a natural satin finish, walnut (vs. mahogany) back and sides, and a friggin soundport on the bass-side upper bout's side. Yes -- soundports work and it is more enjoyable playing a guitar with one, but the visual thing does take getting used-to.
It's an old "depression special" made new for a modern audience. Do I like that? Well, yes I do like that. I think this thing sounds pretty similar to the midsy, punchy, fingerpicker-centric L-00s of the past while having maybe a slightly brighter, more snappy sound. It's still the woody Gibson thing, though, and if you're looking for "big guitar" warmth, move on. Where it differs most in "feel" from a vintage L-00 is its more-modern C neck profile, 1 11/16" nut width, and shallower fretboard radius.
All I had to do was give it a quick setup before popping it into the racks in the store, as this guy came in on consignment. It plays spot-on and is ready to go.
