1960s Kay 5-String Resonator Banjo
Considering the tuner type in use on this rustbucket old Kay, it dates at least to the mid-'60s. This model had been in construction in this style since the very late '40s, however, with cosmetic changes made now and then to keep it "up to date."
It's got a simple, multi-ply rim construction with a hoop tonering. It has the usual very-long (27"+) scale length and neat, stenciled motifs on the headstock. Everything appears to be original on this except for the bridge I added (which is compensated).
Work included a fret level/dress, side dots install, new bridge, double-bolt addition to the neck/rim joint, cleaning, and setup adjustments.
If you'd like to hear one of these, I had a chance to record a clip of an Old Kraftsman version a while back (click here).
