1999 Fender Mexico Fretless Jazz Bass Electric Bass Guitar
I setup this bass some years ago for its owner but now it's come back here for resale. I also remember playing these factory fretless models years ago, too, when they were harder to find out in the world. This is a nice, functional, practical, classic-sounding, well-handling instrument and it's got some old black tapewound strings on it which give it nice "mwah" and "growl" as you head up the board. I'd love to hear it with a set of modern tapes, though, with smoother windings -- though these are pretty nice as-is.
This one has passed the "age test" as far as its neck is concerned -- the neck is straight under tension and adjusts accurately with the truss rod. About 1/3 of old Fender bass necks can get pretty wonky (usually twist on one side of the board that can't be removed without board work) as they age and/or are mistreated over time, but the rest hold-up fine and this one has.
I learned on a J-bass so this one feels right at home. It's got a fast neck and, for someone playing fretless with a lot of work towards the middle and upper registers, it's a hard body shape and configuration to beat.
