2019 Fender Mexico Vintera '60s Modified Jaguar HH Electric Guitar

Update 2024: I sold this back in September of '23 but the owner has swapped-around his collection a bit so it's back here for sale. It's just as it left and playing spot-on, too.

I have to admit that when I first saw this guitar, I was thinking -- "ah, a Jagmaster with a different whammy." It's actually much, much more than that and it has a very clever wiring setup that means it can perform the roles of several guitars rather than just one.

It plays, feels, and looks more or less like a typical Jaguar. The neck feels quick and easy like a late-'60s Fender neck shape, though the radius on the board is a little less steep at 9 1/2" rather than 7 1/4" or so. The pickups, however, are open-topped humbuckers. Ordinarily I would look at this and immediately write it off (for my own use) as a gained-up rawk machine. However, the upper control plate has been repurposed and the two roll-off pots on it no longer do volume/tone for a secondary rhythm circuit. 

Instead, each roll-off dials-in the amount of blend-in you get from one side (coil) of each pickup. This lets you get tones ranging from a traditional bright Jaguar-like single-coil sound, through warmer '60s-style mini-humbucker and Guild-style humbucker sounds, mid-'60s Gibson bucker sound, and right into punchy, full-on modern bucker sounds. When I was first fiddling around with it, I found the sweet spot (for me) was with about 25% of the second coil "added" in -- it was bright and clean and FilterTron-sounding which is a good vibe for a Jaguar. I like it!

All that aside, I'm a big fan of Jaguars, so of course I liked the handling and feel of this guitar. It only really needed a glorified setup to get it going, too. And the color? Sonic Blue with a mint-green pickguard? Hard to beat that... and it mixes nicely with the orangey-brown of the pau ferro fretboard, too.

Condition notes: it's been played a bit and has one ding on the edge (pictured) and a little light scratching here and there on the body but overall it looks good. The neck has a little darkening in first and second position of the fretboard from playwear. The "strangle" (bass/mids-roll-off) switch below the pickup selectors is current not doing anything. It looks fine but I expect the switch itself just needs to be replaced.
