2023 Twigg-Smith Astro Set-Neck Electric Guitar
This is the third Astro model we've had in the shop from Vermont's own Mr. Jason Twigg-Smith and it's the first one I've seen done-up "Gibson-style" with a shorter scale length, set neck, angled headstock, and mahogany body and neck. It's very slick, sounds alarmingly-good, and feels retro-comfy in the hands. He uses a more-generous neck profile (generally) that's '50s-ish in flavor and the P90-like pickups definitely enhance that feeling.
It's a lightweight instrument at a little under 7 lbs and it's comfortable either on a strap or in the lap. It also looks killer, with its quirky body shape and retro-futuristic design style. The figured-maple top gives it more of a "boutique" look at a glance, too, while its blue-stained finish and grey-brown mahogany back and sides give it a bit of a "one-off" personality. It's almost PRS-like because of that.
The pickups are definitely P90s in sound but they remind me of the lower-wind, more-balanced, early-'60s P90s rather than the raunchy and sometimes too-dark '50s ones. They remind me a lot of the sound you get from the average Lollar P90 more than the usual "off the shelf" P90s from Artec and the like.
