1966 Guild Thunder I Reverb Tube Amp

This amp has been fully-serviced, 3-pronged, and whatnot by Mr. Winfield Holt of Speaking Volumes up in Burlington, VT. It sounds a treat, looks a treat, and is one quirky old devil.

If you're a fan of surf rock and associated bright-sounding, reverb-drenched, cheeky music, this thing was built for you. It's got a 12" main speaker driven by the "normal amp" and an 8" speaker that's driven only by a separate amp specifically running the reverb. What you're hearing, with the reverb on, then, is a mix of the "dry" amp with a separate reverb amp added to it, so the "original signal" is not cluttered but rather has the reverb added next to it. It's a pretty original take, I think, and I love the sounds you can get from this box.

This model also has a tremolo on-board and three input jacks -- each with their own padding and EQ. The "bright" sounds most like other amps -- Fender and maybe Magnatone-style amps come to mind when describing it. The "normal" jack has a much darker sound and would perhaps be what a jazz cat might like to plug into. The "mic" jack has a hotter and darker-sounding input and will overdrive the amp nicely when plugging a guitar into it. I'm guessing it was intended to make use of thin-sounding and quiet dynamic and crystal mics but if, say, you fit an A/B box in front of this amp with A in "bright" and B in "mic" you could easily have "B" be your boosted/lead channel. Just saying...!

Anyhow, the tolex is a little dirty and there's wear and tear throughout, but overall the visual condition is nice. There's a little tape residue on the front panel near the on/off switch. Three of the knobs are replacements, too. Both speakers are also replacements (the big one's an old '60s Fender speaker, though).

Gee--you didn't pull the volume knob up to increase the brightness! Doing that while plugged into the bright channel creates the most marvelous ice pick in the ears sound when I play my '67 Jetstar through my '65 version of this amp. I also love this as a steel guitar amp.
