2000s Romanian (Reghin, Hora?) 3/4 Hybrid Double Bass

I bought this bass from a local customer who's downsizing her collection. It's only stamped "Reghin" inside and dates to around Y2K or the late '90s. It was probably made at the Hora factory in Romania and is a "hybrid" double bass with a gamba shape (my favorite). The hybrid means it has a carved, solid spruce top while the back and sides are ply maple. This makes for a bass that's very functional and stable but also has that "carved-top" sound. It makes a killer jazz bass that also bows beautifully.

My guy Andy gave it a once-over and good setup and it's now playing bang-on and ready to go. The original bass shop that sold it had installed the adjuster wheels backwards (oops) so we turned them around the correct way. It has a few nicks and dings on its edges but it's mostly clean, clean, clean!

It comes with a Fishman Full Circle pickup installed (it sounds great and has very low feedback -- I was playing this right next to the amp turned-up pretty loud) and also has a Mooradian gigbag (those are pricey!) and an inexpensive, student wood bow in the French style.

I'm very tempted to keep this for myself because it really is a good-sounding, practical, gig-worthy beast. It's got a nice ebony fingerboard, too, with very little "scoop" to the neck and so it plays low and fast and easy. We think the strings are Thomastik Spirocores and they definitely feel/sound like them. There's a whole lot of cash sunk in accessories on this guy!

I once visited the factory. If there's a label with a sloop on it inside, it's finished at the factory - which used to make boats before musical instruments.

There is however a large spin-off industry in the town with one-man workshops buying up instruments 'in the white' or even before any assembly, and then taking them further to their taste. It could be this one's made that way. In the heart of Transilvania...
