2020s Harley Benton R-458BK MultiScale Fan-Fret 8-String Electric Guitar

I wish I had any idea of what to do with a guitar like this -- in the video, I clearly don't, but I hope you can get a sense of its tonal variations. I know there are 8-string aces out there who would make this sing and chug and blow out speakers, however!

I will say that the fanned frets (with the longer scale for the lower strings) make a heck of a lot of difference in whether the lower notes actually stay in tune and respond like "guitar strings" (as opposed to slack rubber bands). I'm not sure I could handle the low F# of this instrument if it were still at the 25 1/2" scale of the high E string's side of the neck.

Anyhow, the guitar itself is a newer instrument but it does show a little wear on the edges (though you can't tell until it's glared in the lights, as I've tried to do). The frets are all in good order, it's been stable since it's been here (the last few weeks), and the pickups sound excellent. I'm actually very surprised that something like this can be made at the price point Thomann sells these.

Repairs included: a good setup.

  • Weight: 7 lbs 14 oz
  • Scale length: 25 1/2" to 27" fanned
  • Nut width: 2 1/16"
  • Neck shape: slim C/oval back
  • Board radius: 16"
  • Body width: 12 1/8"
  • Body depth: 1 3/4"
  • Body wood: poplar
  • Bridge: individual saddles
  • Fretboard: amaranth (purpleheart) per their website
  • Neck wood: maple
  • Pickups: 2x bar-style humbuckers
  • Action height at 12th fret: 1/16” overall (fast, spot-on)
  • String gauges: 65w-9
  • Truss rod: adjustable
  • Neck relief: straight
  • Fret style: medium-wide

Condition notes: it's a newer guitar and clean save for some scuffing/scratching on the body's top and edges (tried to take photos) that's not obvious unless you're looking.

It comes with: no case, sorry.

The 27 inch Scale on the Bass side pulls the Low strings a little tighter to make them sound stronger & punchier, that way they can be thinner & easier to play.
