1918 Weymann Style 24 4-String Banjo-Mandolin

Overview: Like all Weymann instruments (built in Philadelphia), this Style 24 banjo-mandolin is sturdy, functional, and well-built. It's a fairly plain model but all of the hardware is rugged and ready and it has nice proportions. I've modified it from its original 8-string format to a 4-string format which is easier to keep in tune and gives a "mini-tenor-banjo" sound rather than the horse-cloppy, 8-string banjo-mando sound.

Tone: It's sweet and mellow but has nice pop and enough volume to carry in smaller jams and get-togethers.

Feel: It's normal for the time -- the neck is bigger and has a V profile to the rear. It plays quick as a mandolin but I wouldn't want to restring it for uke-style use.

Interesting features: The enclosed tuners are nice. While it has no tonering, the top of the multi-ply maple rim is shaped to act like one. The fretboard extension is rugged enough that it's usable (doesn't flex as much as most banjo extensions), too.

Repairs included: I modded it to a 4-string, gave it a level/dress of the frets, added side dots, fit a new bridge, and set it up. It plays spot-on and is ready to go.

Condition notes: It's all-original save for the replacement bridge, the side dots, and the tuner modifications. I also removed the damaged original neck brace and used a simple bolt-through-rim attachment for the neck instead. This is more reliable than the shim-style neck brace this used from the factory (the shims tend to fall out as the weather changes). The finish is in overall good order but the whole instrument shows average usewear throughout. The tailpiece cover is missing and the foam at the tailpiece area is simply to damp the string afterlength. The four pearl dots at the headstock are ones I added.

It comes with: Sorry, no case.
