1980s Kramer Ferrington Acoustic/Electric Modded Guitar
My friend Phil found this cool old US-made Ferrington (I think we have another one of these hanging-around the shop somewhere) and sent it up here some time back to be made useful. To that end, I've leveled/dressed the frets, replaced the original (ground-humming) piezo bridge pickup with a K&K, added a Fralin PAF-style humbucker in the soundhole (with custom "tabs" for mounting it), fit a new wiring harness, and set it all up.
Everything is passive and good quality and so, unlike the original configuration, this one should keep going and going as it ages rather than needing batteries, regular electronics clean-outs, and the like. He wanted it setup like a normal electric with 10s and an unwound G, so that's how I've set it up (and compensated the saddle). It plays quick and easy.
I think that, if one were planning to go direct into a mixer board for live use, an amp sim for the electric side and an EQ or acoustic preamp for the acoustic side wouldn't hurt, but it does sound just fine direct-in as well into any amp or board. The K&K acoustic pickup is naturally quieter than the PAF but that works-out for use as "lead sound" being the mag pickup and "strumming sound" being the acoustic. For use into an electric amp I'd suggest having an EQ box handy for the acoustic side and vice-versa if going direct into an acoustic amp.
These guitars are x-braced and have thin-depth, acoustic-format bodies and bolt-on, electric-style necks.
