1940s Maurer (Larson Brothers) Jumbo Guitar

The owner mentioned that this Larson Brothers beaut was built in '45. I cannot confirm or deny this and, for sure, it is a late '30s or early '40s instrument. I only had a minute or two to snap photos so that's why they're quick and in the back room -- it was a very busy day and my only stopping-point was when I was cleaning-out the inside of the guitar with our compressor.

Anyhow, it's had a lot of repairs over time (including a spliced-on replacement headstock, of all things) and arrived at the shop in good structural shape, though the bridge, pickguard, headstock, and tuners are, of course, replacement bits. It was suffering from a not-very-good refret job, however, and a mild backbow in the neck in first position.

I rectified this backbow by pulling the frets "up" out of their slots a hair and then tacking them in with glue and fill. Then all I needed to do was give it a level/dress of the frets, minor saddle adjustments, and setup work to get it playing smoothly again. The end result is a fast-playing, gorgeous-sounding, J-185-a-like guitar.

This one is solid spruce, x-braced, and with solid mahogany back and sides. The neck is mahogany and it has an ebony fretboard.
