1930s Marwin (Harmony) Star Archtop Guitar

Overview: I've worked on a number of old Marwin-branded instruments and all the ones I handled were made by Harmony -- just like this one. This is like a fancier version of a Harmony Broadway model, as it has solid birch throughout the body (pressed top and back) and some pretty killer trim -- celluloid binding on the body and fancy purfling on top. The sunburst accentuates some of the curly figure in the birch and the back has a faux-flame finish job that covers it up. Oh well!

Interesting features: It has a woody, direct, old-timey sound to it that's satisfying in its plainness. The volume is not bad at all, but it's not as punchy and loud as something like a lower-end Gibson or Kalamazoo archtop. The tortoise pickguard is cool as heck. It has '60s Waverly tuners fit from our parts-bins and the tailpiece is not original but very cool, with a homemade, added crosspiece emblem to it.

Repairs included: Ancel worked on this one -- giving it a neck reset, fret level/dress, side dots, fitting replacement vintage tuners, a new adjustable bridge, and a replacement vintage tailpiece. It's playing spot-on and is ready to go with plenty of adjustment room at the bridge.
