2011 Taylor GT-8 Baritone 8-String Jumbo Guitar

Overview: I remember when these Taylor 8-strings were first announced and thinking to myself -- "that's a one-foot-in, one-foot-out kind-of guitar." I mean, I was entirely wrong, of course. The first time I played one of these I understood exactly why it works so well -- you get some of that Leadbelly, deep twangle thing going-on that offsets the girthy, low-pitched, overall sound. I think it works best for folks who do crosspicking or fingerpicking but a clever strummer can figure-out waits to get the nuance of the instrument to sound its best. Alternating bass-note melody with treble-end chording sounds really cool.

Interesting features: It's got a nice, pearl-inlaid rosette, Martin-style purfling, and a cutaway which does make a lot of sense if you spend time using capos on baritones to get back into "normal range" now and then. This one is intended to be played in B-to-B tuning and the strings are fairly hefty as it's got a 27" baritone scale which is on the shorter end of the spectrum. It has rosewood back and sides and rosewood binding -- classy! The build, fit, and finish are all top-notch, as you would expect, and I always stump for the Taylor neck joints as they make neck reset adjustments easy-peasy.

Repairs included: It's quite the clean guitar and that corresponds to the frets, too, which are barely-used. I reset the neck angle just a hair and set it up and that was all it needed. It's playing spot-on and ready to go.
