1900s Bauer "Monogram" Spruce/Rosewood Parlor Guitar
We've had no lack for cool old Bauers through the shop in the last few years. This one is owned by a friend of the shop from Pennsylvania and we got it ready for his visit last week. As I recall, Max leveled and dressed the frets and Jose and I modified the bridge a bit to accept a lowered saddle area and fit the bridge pins better. It's now quite a nice player and is strung with a Thomastik KR116 set of strings -- classical-tension but with the sound of a folksy steel set. It's a pretty ideal little fingerpicking guitar. When these were made, they were intended for gut strings, so this Thomastik set is a nice "cheater" way to get a steelier sound.
That said, the usual Bauer stuff applies -- the build quality is good, it's made of premium materials (ebony board and bridge, spruce top with nicely-sculpted ladder bracing, Brazilian rosewood back and sides, rosewood headstock veneer, etc.), and it sounds clean and warm when played.
