1960s Homebrew Lefty Solidbody F-Style Electric Mandolin (w/Gibson EM-150 Parts)
Overview: As if this homebrew, left-handed, F-style, electric mandolin weren't odd enough, it also sports the wiring harness and 4-pole P90 single coil pickup from a late-'50s or early-'60s Gibson EM-150 electric mandolin. The fretboard and tuners look like the type found at the back of old Harmony catalogs in the parts section and the original bridge was one of those, too. So, clearly -- someone made their own creation with a mix of '60s parts that were available to them. It's a tour-de-force of odd and lovely and, now that it's been gone-through, plays like a champ. You've got to like a bigger, chunky neck, though!
Repairs included: Jose leveled/dressed the frets, added a ground to the wiring, fixed some cosmetic stuff, cleaned-up an oddly-reinforced neck joint (it had a plate with screws added despite its being glued -- he recessed these and added pearl dots for snazz), made a new, lefty-compensated adjustable bridge and installed it, and set it up. It's playing spot-on and is ready to rip!
