1930s Regal Spruce/Mahogany Tenor Guitar

Overview: Regal was the first firm on the scene with tenor guitars in the '20s and this model -- in spruce over mahogany -- was their first foray into them. This is a later version of it (probably '30s) but it's otherwise the same as the early-'20s ones. We worked on this one sometime recently (last year? early this year?) but the owner hasn't been using it as much as he thought so it's back here for resale. I'm a huge fan of these tailpieced Regal tenors as they're compact (like a baritone ukulele), extremely loud and punchy, and tend towards the warmer side of tone despite the fact that they've got an almost banjo-like attack.

The spruce-over-mahogany models are a little harder to find, too, compared to the spruce-over-birch ones and this one has some nice curl/flame to the mahogany. It has tons of wear and tear and character but is a solid player and currently setup (and the bridge compensated for) DGBE/Chicago tuning.

Repairs included: As I recall, this got a reinforcement bolt installed at the neck joint, fret level/dress, side dots, hairline crack cleats on the top and back, cleaning, and setup work. It also got a fresh set of tuners and a replacement tailpiece as the original was missing. It's playing bang-on and ready to go.

Condition notes: The bridge, tailpiece, and tuners are non-original. It has repaired hairline cracks on the back and a center-seam repair on the top. The top shows a hair of sink around the bridge but that is very common on these as they're so lightly-made (I haven't seen one without it) and the bridge is between two ladder braces. There are scratches, scuffs, and small nicks and dings here and there throughout. The finish has weather-checked, too.

It comes with: It has a K&K pickup installed! Passive and excellent-sounding... no case, though!
