1940s Kay M-1 3/4 Ply Double Bass
This is a local customer's bass and I'm not sure if it will be for sale or not. It has no label but is surely-enough a late '40s Kay M-1 with the violin corners instead of the gamba shape. It's a good-sounding, quick-playing bass (despite a little relief in the neck), and it has a solid, practical feel about it. The sunburst in the finish is excellent, too.
It has some quite ugly repairs to the heel and neck at the joint that mean the neck angle is a little low on the body (and thus requires a lower bridge), but Manny managed to recut an old bridge into something aesthetically-pleasing and functional for it and set-about repairing burst seams and giving it a good setup to boot. We hemmed and hawed over addressing the neck joint for months while it awaited repair, but in the end we decided against opening-up that can of worms.
