2000 David Hodson Selmer-Maccaferri-Style Gypsy-Jazz Tenor Guitar

Overview: David Hodson's gypsy-jazz instruments have been used by a variety of big names in the genre, and this tenor guitar version of a "grand bouche" Selmer-style model is a fine example of his work. This was in the Steven Pyott tenor guitar collection and, as far as I can tell, was custom-ordered from Mr. Hodson by him. For those not in the know, Mr. Pyott had a somewhat famous, ginormous collection of all sorts of tenor guitars.

It's got plenty of volume and cut and, after a fresh refret, plays like an absolute champ. It definitely does that "compressed sting" when you dig into it but if you've got a lighter touch, the instrument responds beautifully for that, too. When this first arrived here for consignment (it was tuned to GDAE at the time) I took it down to the river across from the shop for a half hour of picking to enjoy it and it worked just as well for Celtic-style noodling and droned chords as it did for fiery gypsy-style licks.

Repairs included: Ancel planed the board and refretted it with larger stock. It then got a setup. It's playing spot-on and ready to serve!

Condition notes: There's minor usewear in evidence (light scratching here and there, minor finish blem to the back of the neck from use, etc.) but overall it's looking good. It has had a fresh refret job done by Ancel so the board and frets are in fabulous shape. It's otherwise original throughout.

It comes with: It has a good, hard case.
