1920s Harmony 2-Point Flatback Mandolin

Overview: We worked on this instrument in recent memory and it's held-up just fine! It's a Harmony-made, 2-point mandolin from the mid-'20s and features a Sears Supertone label in the soundhole. The body is all solid birch and it has a poplar neck and ebonized-maple fretboard with a compensated, rosewood bridge.

The one is sweet and clean with a little bit of woody, midsiness that makes it charming instead of chirpy. The decalcomania decoration is icing on the cake and the black finish with its white trim stands-out nicely. This one, interestingly, has a longer scale length and so it's a little easier to keep it in tune at a jam (when you whack on short-scale mandolins it's a little easier to put them out) and so it's more useful as a player's instrument than an at-home, couch warrior, like many old flatbacks.

Repairs included: Previously it got a 1/2" dowel installed from neckblock to endblock to shore it up (this design is underbuilt at the neckblock and they tend to have sunken soundhole/top problems when this is not addressed), a level/dress of the frets, a hairline crack repair to the top, and setup work. It's still playing spot-on and is ready to serve.

Condition notes: It's got a variety of old scratches throughout the finish and the finish is weather-checked throughout, too. As noted, we added a dowel to the inside of the instrument (rides through the center of the soundbox) as extra structure. The side dots are added. The bridge is on the low side but the action hasn't shifted since work was done.
