1984 Dobro Squareneck Resonator Guitar

Overview: This is a pretty classic Dobro in many senses -- beat-up, with terrific sound, and gear-tweaked endlessly over its years. It has an '84 date at the headtock's top edge. It's a black-finished guitar that's just a little bit brown in full sunlight. I've known this instrument for a while and it has almost a prototypical Dobro voice -- up-front, saucy, burred at the edges, and honkily-sweet. It's not a modern, super-full, Jerry Douglas-style instrument, but it's got the "classic records" sound to a T. It also looks like it was played into the ground, but that's the fun part, right?

Repairs included: Previously, Ancel reglued the headstock and I had set this up nice and trim for its previous owner to play and sound its best. The current owner also asked for the nut to be cut narrower to original spec spacing at the nut. This time around, we fit replacement tuners (the originals were on their way out) and a replacement tailpiece (for the same reason). It's playing spot-on and ready to serve.

  • Weight: 6 lbs 2 oz
  • Scale length: 24 1/2"
  • Nut width: 1 13/16"
  • Neck shape: rectangle
  • Board radius: flat
  • Body width: 14"
  • Body depth: 3 1/4"
  • Top wood: ply birch
  • Back & sides wood: ply birch
  • Cone: Dobro spider-bridge-style
  • Fretboard: rosewood
  • Neck wood: maple
  • String gauges: 56w-14 or similar for GBDGBD tuning

Condition notes: The tuners are newer replacements and the tailpiece is replaced as well with an older one. There's a repaired crack in the headstock. There are scuffs, scratches, nicks, dings, and finish wear all throughout. The hardware all shows wear and tear. The saddles are replacements (aluminum) but sound is excellent. There are a few control holes in the top and a jack-hole in the side that were filled previously. What can I say? This is clearly a player's instrument...! Also, there is a small gap at the bottom of the heel, though the neck is securely attached. It's a squareneck, so this point is just an aesthetic consideration.

It comes with: Sorry, no case.
