2010s AXL Badwater 1216 Copper LP-Style Electric Guitar

A friend of mine traded this in towards work due from last year and all it needed was a mild cleaning, new strings, and a setup. I hadn't heard of AXL guitars before (but I'm pretty green as far as anything post-'80s goes), but this one's build is pretty dang nice for the price point these initially sold at.

It's a Les Paul-style guitar with a set neck and solid mahogany body. The scale length, neck feel, and general handling and sound are all very familiar to anyone who's played '70s LPs. The top edge and fretboard are bound and the finish is a satin clearcoat over a brown stain. This particular model comes from the factory with "aged" copper-colored hardware and it seems like said hardware was only used on this model for a short run.

While it came from the factory with some "relic'd" appointments, my buddy put some good pickwear near the pickup surrounds and plenty of extra scratches and finish wear and tear here and there throughout from actual use. I honestly don't know what's real and what's "faux" at this point. It's missing its original pickguard but everything else is there, otherwise.

Repairs included: mild cleaning, restring, and a setup.

Setup notes: action is perfect at 1/16" overall at the 12th fret, it's strung with 46w-10 gauges, and the neck is straight and has a working truss rod.

Scale length: 24 3/4"
Nut width: 1 11/16"
String spacing at nut: 1 3/8"
String spacing at bridge: 2"
Body length: 17 1/4"
Lower bout width: 13"
Waist width: 7 3/8"
Upper bout width: 9 1/2"
Side depth at endpin: 1 13/16" + arch to top
Body wood: mahogany
Neck wood: mahogany
Fretboard: rosewood, plastic nut
Bridge: adjustable TOM-style
Neck feel: slim-to-medium C-shape, ~12" radius board

Condition notes: missing original pickguard, replacement pickup selector switch tip (black), and now some extra wear and tear overall on the body. It's looking good!

AXL started by selling import direct guitars, then had USA models of several of their guitars including the 1216. USA Model meant the body, neck, and binding was done overseas, then finished in the states. Those models had some pretty impressive electronics including cloth wiring, orange drop capacitors, and name-brand pickups, including Seth Lover humbuckers. They also had upgraded tuners and pots. I have an AXL LP Junior style that came with the fancy electronics and a Lollar P-90. It doesn't have the relicing that the 1216s carried, just a nice dark brown satin finish. Genuinely, I love that guitar.

i own one of these and its so hard to find reliable specs on it. ive seen mentions on the body being (believe me) alder among (of course) mahogany. the only official information on it i found is from a video on youtube on namm 09, and the axl ceo says is made out of all of the "proper woods" youd expect on a single cut. thanks for the neck radius spec. my only doubt about the guitar now is over the neck. ive had mahogany necks before and this doesnt feel like mahogany. but whatever it is, its GREAT. cheers!
